Our Work / Marine Conservation
Protect the life beneath the surface.
HEADTURNED is developing marine work focused on the living systems of our coasts and seas. We expect to begin around the UK and surrounding waters, working with specialists and sharing what we learn with projects further afield.
Marine life
Every part of the sea matters.
Plankton, corals, anemones and other invertebrates are part of the picture alongside fish, seabirds and marine mammals. We want to understand what each species needs and how changes to one part of a marine system affect the rest.

Sources of harm
Find what is putting life at risk.
Plastics, lost fishing gear, waste, poisons and other pollutants can reach the sea from many places. We want to investigate their sources and effects so that practical work can address the cause as well as the visible damage.

Survey and evidence
See the whole environment before acting.
Marine surveying, mapping and monitoring can help us understand species, water quality and the condition of habitats from shorelines and estuaries to the seabed. That evidence should guide where protection or recovery work is needed.

Marine archaeology
Protect the histories beneath the water.
Our seas also hold evidence of how people lived, travelled and interacted with the natural world. We look to work with marine archaeologists to understand and safeguard that heritage while respecting the life and habitats around it.
Recovery and collaboration
Bring the right expertise to the water.
We look to work alongside marine biologists, scientists, surveyors, archaeologists and conservation teams. Together, we can investigate challenges, develop useful technology and support species and habitat recovery where the evidence shows it can help.

Wider waters
Learn locally. Share across oceans.
Marine life and the pressures on it extend beyond national waters. As our capability grows, we want the knowledge, methods and partnerships developed through our work to help others protect marine environments around the world.
