Our Work / Food Sustainability
Grow food with the future in mind.
HEADTURNED is developing ways to grow and distribute fruit, salad crops and vegetables that serve people while using land, water and other resources with greater care.
What we grow
Match the crop to the place.
Leafy salads, vegetables and fruit do not all belong in the same growing system. Vertical farms, greenhouses, polytunnels, orchards and open fields each have a role. What we grow, including orchard fruits, citrus, bananas or pineapples, should reflect local conditions, available resources and demand.
Technology in practice
Let evidence improve every growing cycle.
Sensing, automation and careful measurement can help growers understand conditions, use resources wisely and learn what produces reliable results.
Land and resources
Understand the full cost of what we grow.
Food production depends on water, energy, land and healthy living systems. We want to assess those demands together, so improving access to food does not simply move the pressure elsewhere.
From farm to table
Grow closer to where food is needed.
We are exploring how growing in multiple suitable locations, with local collection and delivery, could bring fresh food closer to the communities it serves.
Packaging
Work towards food without plastic packaging.
Our goal is to remove plastic packaging from our food systems. We want to work with specialists on suitable alternatives, including materials made from mycelium and seaweed, and assess how each option protects food and is handled after use.
Food for the future
Build a food system that can keep learning.
We want to develop this capability with growers, researchers and technology specialists, improve it through practical use, and share useful methods beyond our own growing sites.
