Environmental Sustainability Policy

This policy sets out how the HEADTURNED Foundation aims to minimise its environmental footprint and align day-to-day decisions with its long-term conservation goals.

This document sits alongside our wider strategic plans for land management, Sanctuary development, and rewilding.

1. Purpose and scope

The purpose of this Environmental Sustainability Policy is to provide a framework for decisions that affect the HEADTURNED Foundation's environmental impact, including land management, energy use, procurement, and day-to-day operations.

It applies to trustees, staff, volunteers, and contractors when acting on behalf of the Foundation.

2. Principles

Our environmental approach is guided by principles such as:

  • Do no unnecessary harm – minimising negative impacts where they cannot be avoided.
  • Regenerate where possible – supporting biodiversity, soil health, and ecosystem resilience.
  • Think long term – considering the lifetime impact of decisions, not just short-term cost.

3. Land, habitats and rewilding

As the Foundation develops Sanctuary, rewilding, and other land-based projects, we will aim to:

  • Prioritise habitat restoration, connectivity, and ecological diversity.
  • Follow relevant laws and guidance relating to wildlife, protected species, and designated sites.
  • Work with appropriate experts and partners where specialised ecological input is needed.

4. Energy and resource use

In our physical sites and digital operations, we will aim to:

  • Use energy efficiently and reduce waste where practical.
  • Explore and, where feasible, adopt lower-carbon and renewable energy options.
  • Consider the environmental impact of equipment and infrastructure choices over their full life cycle.

5. Materials, procurement and waste

The Foundation will aim to procure goods and services in ways that reduce environmental harm and support responsible suppliers, for example by:

  • Considering durability, repairability, and recyclability when selecting materials and products.
  • Reducing single-use items where alternatives are practical and safe.
  • Managing waste responsibly, with a preference for reduction, reuse, and recycling over disposal.

6. Climate and emissions

As the Foundation grows, we may track key aspects of our environmental impact, including energy use and associated emissions, to help guide improvement over time.

Specific targets, if adopted, may be described in separate plans or strategy documents.

7. Travel and transport

Where people travel on Foundation business, we encourage choices that minimise environmental impact where this is practical and proportionate to the purpose of the journey.

8. Engagement and awareness

Staff, volunteers, and partners play an important role in putting this policy into practice. We aim to:

  • Embed environmental considerations into routine decision-making.
  • Share learning and good practice as projects such as the Sanctuary, Innovation Hub, and vertical farming campus develop.

9. Review and updates

This policy will be reviewed periodically and updated where necessary as our projects, landholdings, and operations evolve.
