The air is humid and the squawk of birds surrounds you; it is truly a challenge to single out one call from the 350+ species that are filling the air. Wandering through the dense rainforest in Brazil, relieved by the shade provided by the verdant canopy, you are mesmerised and amazed knowing that none of this would exist without the valiant effort of the Serra do Tangará Institute.

Instituto Serra do Tangará is a Brazilian non-profit association dedicated to protect, conserve and recover ecosystems in the Guandú River Basin and Ribeirão das Lajes Reservoir, in the municipality of Piraí.

Their story is another personal, and moving one: the reserve as it is today has grown from a small family property acquired in the 1980s, protected by their love for their home, into an expansive-and-expanding Private Natural Heritage Reserve inspired and partly directed by one of the sons, Jovani Monteiro, a biologist.

The land had long been degraded by the production of gold and coffee, before being turned into pasture, but now after years of restoring the area with an approach of forest restoration, scientific research, bird watching tourism and combating environmental crimes, has brought biodiversity booming back. Their work takes place directly in the Serra do Tangará Ecological Reserve, a private area located in the most forested region of the Tinguá-Bocaina Biodiversity Corridor, bordering a vast area of the forest that borders the water’s edge.

Amanda and Jovani have an immense desire to guarantee the long-term protection and restoration of its forest remnants, and all its inhabitants, and aim to do so through partnerships. From planting of seedlings of native species to lay the groundwork for ecosystem restoration, to refaunation bringing back the calls of the forest, they are dedicated to this beautiful part of the Atlantic Forest.

The region needs conservation initiatives that can ensure the maintenance of high biodiversity, especially the large number of endemic and threatened species that it still contains. And they are doing just that:

• 25 thousand native plant seedlings have been planted
• Reintroduction of 5 species of birds and 2 primates
• Reintroduction of birds and mammals caught up in illegal wildlife trade are released back into the wild at the reserve.

The Serra do Tangará Institute’s symbol bird is the Tangará (Chiroxiphia caudata), one of the most common birds found in the forests. This species, in addition to displaying beautiful plumage, has one of the most elaborate reproduction rituals in Brazil.

Ao passear pela densa floresta tropical do Brasil, aliviado pela sombra proporcionada pelo dossel verdejante, você fica hipnotizado e maravilhado ao saber que nada disso existiria sem o valente esforço do Instituto Serra do Tangará.

O Instituto Serra do Tangará é uma associação brasileira sem fins lucrativos dedicada a proteger, conservar e recuperar os ecossistemas da Bacia do Rio Guandú e do Reservatório de Ribeirão das Lajes, no município de Piraí.

A história deles é outra história pessoal e comovente: a reserva, tal como é hoje, cresceu de uma pequena propriedade familiar adquirida na década de 1980, protegida pelo amor à sua casa, para uma Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural em expansão, inspirada e parcialmente dirigida por um dos filhos, Jovani Monteiro, biólogo.

A terra havia sido degradada há muito tempo pela produção de ouro e café, antes de ser transformada em pasto, mas agora, após anos de restauração da área com uma abordagem de restauração florestal, pesquisa científica, turismo de observação de pássaros e combate a crimes ambientais, a biodiversidade voltou a crescer. Seu trabalho é realizado diretamente na Reserva Ecológica da Serra do Tangará, uma área privada localizada na região mais arborizada do Corredor de Biodiversidade Tinguá-Bocaina, fazendo fronteira com uma vasta área de floresta que margeia a água.

Amanda e Jovani têm um desejo imenso de garantir a proteção e a restauração a longo prazo de seus remanescentes florestais e de todos os seus habitantes, e pretendem fazer isso por meio de parcerias. Desde o plantio de mudas de espécies nativas para estabelecer as bases para a restauração do ecossistema, até a refaunação que traz de volta os sons da floresta, eles se dedicam a essa bela parte da Mata Atlântica.

A região precisa de iniciativas de conservação que possam garantir a manutenção da alta biodiversidade, especialmente o grande número de espécies endêmicas e ameaçadas que ainda contém. E é exatamente isso que eles estão fazendo:

• 25 mil mudas de plantas nativas foram plantadas
• Reintrodução de 5 espécies de aves e 2 primatas
• Reintrodução de aves e mamíferos capturados no comércio ilegal de animais silvestres, que são soltos de volta à natureza na reserva.

A ave símbolo do Instituto Serra do Tangará é o Tangará (Chiroxiphia caudata), uma das aves mais comuns encontradas nas florestas. Essa espécie, além de apresentar uma bela plumagem, tem um dos rituais de reprodução mais elaborados do Brasil.
